If you are tired of relying on glasses or contact lenses to see clearly, you have probably come across two of the most popular vision correction procedures available today: LASIK and EVO ICL. Both are excellent options, but they work in fundamentally different ways and are designed for different types of patients. Understanding these differences is the key to choosing the right procedure for your eyes.

At Soni Vision Institute in Cypress, TX, Dr. Ruhi Soni and Dr. Nikitha Reddy offer both LASIK and EVO ICL, giving patients access to the full spectrum of vision correction options rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.

How LASIK Works

LASIK is a corneal reshaping procedure. During surgery, a thin flap is created on the surface of the cornea, and a laser precisely reshapes the underlying tissue to correct your refractive error. The flap is then repositioned, and the cornea heals naturally without stitches. The entire procedure takes about 15 minutes for both eyes, and most patients notice dramatically improved vision within hours.

LASIK is effective for mild to moderate nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), and astigmatism. It has been performed for decades with an outstanding track record of safety and patient satisfaction.

How EVO ICL Works

EVO ICL (Implantable Collamer Lens) takes a completely different approach. Rather than reshaping the cornea, a biocompatible lens is placed inside the eye, between the iris and the natural lens. Think of it as a permanent contact lens that lives inside your eye. The procedure is quick, typically taking less than 20 minutes, and recovery is fast.

Because the cornea is left untouched, EVO ICL is an especially strong option for patients who may not be ideal LASIK candidates.

Key Differences: Candidacy

One of the most important distinctions between LASIK and EVO ICL comes down to who qualifies for each procedure:

Corneal Thickness

LASIK requires a certain amount of corneal tissue to safely perform the reshaping. If your corneas are too thin, LASIK may not be an option. EVO ICL does not alter the cornea at all, making it available to patients with thin corneas.

Prescription Range

LASIK typically treats myopia up to about -8.00 to -10.00 diopters. EVO ICL can correct myopia from -3.00 all the way up to -20.00 diopters, making it particularly valuable for patients with high myopia who fall outside the LASIK treatment range.

Dry Eye Considerations

Patients with pre-existing dry eye may experience worsening symptoms after LASIK, since the procedure involves the corneal surface. EVO ICL tends to be more favorable for dry eye patients because it does not disrupt the corneal nerves.

Key takeaway: If you have thin corneas, high myopia, or significant dry eye, EVO ICL may be the better path. If your prescription and corneal thickness fall within range, LASIK offers a well-established, highly effective solution.

Recovery Comparison

Both procedures offer rapid recovery. LASIK patients typically see well enough to drive within a day or two. EVO ICL patients often notice clear vision within hours and return to normal activities within a few days. Most patients are pleasantly surprised by how quick and comfortable both recoveries are.

The Reversibility Advantage

One unique advantage of EVO ICL is its reversibility. Because the lens is implanted rather than tissue being removed, it can be removed or exchanged if needed. LASIK, by comparison, permanently reshapes the cornea. For some patients, the peace of mind that comes with a reversible procedure is an important factor in their decision.

Age Considerations

Both LASIK and EVO ICL are approved for patients 21 and older with a stable prescription. However, for patients in their mid-40s and beyond who are starting to experience presbyopia (age-related near vision loss), refractive lens exchange may be a more comprehensive solution that addresses both distance and near vision in a single procedure.

Which Is Right for You?

There is no universally "better" procedure. The right choice depends entirely on your unique anatomy, prescription, lifestyle, and goals. That is why a thorough evaluation is so important. During your consultation at Soni Vision Institute, your surgeon will perform detailed measurements of your corneal thickness, curvature, prescription stability, and overall eye health to recommend the procedure that will give you the best possible outcome.

Whether you are a strong LASIK candidate or EVO ICL is the better fit, what matters most is that you are in the hands of a highly trained surgeon who can offer both options and guide you to the right one.
