Insurance Coverage

What Does Insurance Typically Cover?

Coverage varies by plan, but here is a general guide to what most patients can expect. Our billing team will verify your specific benefits before any procedure.

Typically Covered

  • Basic Cataract Surgery — Facility Costs, Anesthesia, Surgeon Fees, & Manual Surgery
  • Glaucoma treatment — diagnostic testing, monitoring visits, eye drops, SLT laser, and MIGS surgery
  • Medical eye exams — evaluations related to a medical condition (cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration, dry eye)

Out-of-Pocket Investment

  • Advanced Cataract Surgery Lens Options — Toric, Multifocal, & Light Adjustable Lens (LAL) selections to enhance your postoperative visual quality and need for glasses
  • Laser-Assisted Cataract Surgery — laser-guided precision to deliver the most optimal visual results

  • Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE) — lens replacement surgery to reduce your need for glasses

Every patient’s coverage is different. We verify your benefits before your procedure and provide a clear cost breakdown — no surprises.

Understanding the Investment

Advanced Technology Lenses: A Lifetime Investment

When you choose an advanced technology lens during cataract surgery, you are investing in decades of visual freedom. Unlike glasses or contacts, which need regular replacement, a lens implant is designed to last a lifetime.

The out-of-pocket cost covers the advanced lens itself, additional diagnostic testing required for precise lens selection, and the specialized surgical expertise needed to optimize your outcome. The exact fee varies by lens type.

During your consultation, your surgeon will recommend the best lens for your eyes and lifestyle. Our team will then provide a clear, itemized estimate — so you know exactly what to expect before you commit.

Common Questions

Cost & Insurance FAQ

Will I receive a cost estimate before my procedure?

+

Absolutely. After your consultation, our team will provide a detailed, written estimate that includes everything — what insurance covers, what your out-of-pocket responsibility will be, and any available financing options. We want you to feel completely informed and comfortable before making any decisions.

Can I use my HSA or FSA for eye surgery?

+

Yes. Health Savings Accounts (HSA) and Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) can typically be used for eye surgery expenses, including the out-of-pocket costs associated with advanced technology lenses, LASIK, PRK, EVO ICL, and other procedures. Using pre-tax dollars can significantly reduce your effective cost. We recommend checking with your plan administrator for specific eligibility details.

What insurance plans do you accept?

+

Soni Vision Institute accepts Medicare, most major commercial insurance plans, and many managed care networks. If you are unsure whether we participate in your plan, please call our office at (346) 818-6780 and our team will be happy to verify your coverage before your visit.

Are advanced technology lenses worth the additional investment?

+

For many patients, absolutely. Consider that the average person spends thousands of dollars on glasses and contact lenses over their lifetime. An advanced technology lens is a one-time investment that can provide decades of clear vision at multiple distances — often reducing or eliminating the need for glasses entirely. Many of our patients describe it as one of the best investments they have ever made in their quality of life.

Is cataract surgery both eyes at once or separate?

+

Cataract surgery is typically performed on one eye at a time, with the second eye scheduled one to two weeks later. This approach allows your surgeon to evaluate the outcome of the first eye and optimize the lens selection for the second. Each eye is a separate procedure with separate insurance billing, which also makes the out-of-pocket investment for advanced lenses more manageable — spread across two dates rather than one.

Do I need a referral for insurance to cover my visit?

+

Most insurance plans do not require a referral to see an ophthalmologist. However, some managed care and HMO plans do require one from your primary care physician. We recommend checking with your insurance provider if you are unsure. Our front desk team can also help you determine whether a referral is needed when you call to schedule.
