LASIK

Custom Bladeless LASIK

LASIK (Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis) is the world’s most performed elective surgical procedure — with over 700,000 procedures performed in the US each year and a patient satisfaction rate consistently above 96%. During LASIK, a femtosecond laser creates a thin flap in the cornea. An excimer laser then precisely reshapes the underlying corneal tissue to correct your refractive error — nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism. The flap is repositioned and heals naturally, with no stitches required. The procedure takes about 10 minutes per eye. Most patients see 20/20 or better by the next morning.

Candidacy

Am I a LASIK Candidate?

You may be a good candidate if:

  • You are 18 or older
  • Your prescription has been stable for 1–2 years
  • You are nearsighted, farsighted, or have astigmatism
  • You have adequate corneal thickness
  • Your eyes are healthy (no keratoconus, severe dry eye, or active infection)

LASIK may not be right if:

  • Your prescription is very high or still changing
  • Your corneas are too thin
  • You have an autoimmune condition affecting healing
  • You are pregnant or nursing
  • You have keratoconus or other corneal disorders

Not a candidate? EVO ICL, PRK, and RLE may be excellent alternatives.

LASIK FAQ

Understanding LASIK

What is LASIK and how does it work? +

LASIK (Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis) is a refractive surgery that reshapes the cornea to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. A femtosecond laser creates a thin flap in the cornea, then an excimer laser precisely reshapes the underlying tissue. The flap is repositioned and heals naturally without stitches.

What does “bladeless” or “all-laser” LASIK mean? +

Bladeless LASIK means both steps of the procedure are performed with lasers rather than a manual blade. A femtosecond laser creates the corneal flap (replacing the older microkeratome blade), and an excimer laser reshapes the cornea. This all-laser approach offers greater precision, more predictable flap thickness, and improved safety.

How long does the LASIK procedure take? +

The actual laser treatment takes less than 60 seconds per eye. From start to finish, including preparation and positioning, you can expect to be in the procedure room for about 15–20 minutes total. Most patients are in and out of the surgery center within an hour.

Is LASIK painful? +

LASIK is performed with numbing eye drops, so the procedure itself is virtually painless. You may feel light pressure during the flap creation, but no pain. Some patients experience mild dryness, light sensitivity, or a gritty sensation in the first 24–48 hours, which typically resolves quickly with prescribed drops.

Candidacy & Consultation

How do I know if I’m a good candidate for LASIK? +

Good LASIK candidates are generally 18 or older with a stable prescription for at least one to two years. You need adequate corneal thickness, healthy eyes free of conditions like keratoconus or severe dry eye, and a prescription within the treatable range. A comprehensive consultation with Dr. Soni will determine your candidacy through detailed measurements.

What prescription range can LASIK correct? +

LASIK can typically correct nearsightedness up to about −8 diopters, farsightedness up to about +6 diopters, and astigmatism up to about 6 diopters. Patients with prescriptions outside these ranges may be better suited for alternative procedures like EVO ICL or refractive lens exchange.

Can LASIK fix astigmatism? +

Yes, LASIK is highly effective at correcting astigmatism. The excimer laser can reshape the cornea to correct its irregular curvature, which is the underlying cause of astigmatism. Custom wavefront-guided treatments are particularly precise for astigmatism correction.

Is there an age limit for LASIK? +

You must be at least 18 years old for LASIK, and your prescription should be stable for one to two years. There is no strict upper age limit, but patients over 40–45 should be aware that presbyopia (age-related loss of near focus) will still develop regardless of LASIK. For older patients, refractive lens exchange may be a better option.

Results & Recovery

How quickly will I see results after LASIK? +

Most patients notice dramatically improved vision within hours of LASIK. By the next morning, the majority see 20/20 or better. Vision continues to stabilize and sharpen over the first few weeks as the cornea heals completely.

How long does LASIK recovery take? +

Most patients return to work and normal activities within 24–48 hours. You will use prescribed eye drops for several weeks to support healing and prevent dryness. Strenuous exercise and swimming should be avoided for about one to two weeks. Full visual stabilization occurs within one to three months.

Will I still need reading glasses after LASIK? +

If you are under 40, LASIK will likely give you clear vision at all distances without glasses. If you are over 40–45, you may still need reading glasses due to presbyopia, a natural age-related condition that affects near vision. Monovision LASIK, where one eye is corrected for distance and the other for near, is an option for some presbyopic patients.

Can LASIK results wear off over time? +

The corneal reshaping performed during LASIK is permanent and does not reverse. However, your eyes can still undergo natural changes over time, including presbyopia after age 40–45 or minor prescription shifts. A small percentage of patients may benefit from a touch-up enhancement years later.

Safety & Practical

What are the risks of LASIK? +

LASIK is one of the most studied elective procedures in medicine, with a complication rate under 1%. The most common side effects are temporary dryness, glare, and halos around lights at night, which typically resolve within a few weeks to months. Serious complications are extremely rare. Dr. Soni will review your specific risk factors during your consultation.

How much does LASIK cost? +

LASIK is typically not covered by insurance because it is considered an elective procedure. The cost varies based on your prescription and the technology used. We offer transparent pricing and flexible financing options. Contact our office to learn about current pricing and payment plans.

Can I wear makeup or exercise after LASIK? +

You should avoid eye makeup for about one week after LASIK to reduce infection risk. Light exercise can resume after a few days, but contact sports, swimming, and activities that risk eye impact should wait one to two weeks. Dr. Soni will provide specific guidelines based on your healing progress at your follow-up visits.
